Social media was abuzz last week after the Village of Warfield wrote a Facebook post about a gold ring found in a dank place - a municipal sewer drain.

“Public works crews found a woman’s engagement-style ring today during routine sewer maintenance in upper Warfield,” Carol LeRose, administrator clerk, posted Thursday. “If you think it could be yours, give us a call to provide an accurate description of the ring you lost once upon a time. We’d love to reunite you …unless you flushed it on purpose … we can put it back…”

LeRose says she did not expect the post to get so much attention — there were hundreds to shares and “likes” in just a few hours — so she posted an update the following day.

“After an unexpected and overwhelming response to the story of the ring found by public works yesterday, we’re going to try to narrow the scope with some more clues: crews found the ring in a manhole that services the main along the 600-700 blocks of Shakespeare Street. This could include properties from along Dickens and Shelley, and possibly beyond.”

Understandably, the woman’s ring is in rough shape; however, there is a legible gold stamp and a maker’s mark on it.

So far the village has had a half dozen or so inquires by phone and email.

“Given the vagueness surrounding which properties could have deposited a ring in this particular sewer access, not knowing when the ring was lost, and the fact that properties change hands from time to time, it all still remains a mystery,” LeRose says.

If the original owner turns up, LeRose says she will make sure to update the story on Facebook.
